this was our set last night…

we shot in a tiny apartment (like.. smaller than a studio) in Logan Square… The building was old so the hallways and stairwell were super scary. It was about 104˚ when we arrived (so at this point, my shirt isn’t the same color it was when I left the house) and we had to take the equipment from the truck to the lobby of the building…

Once camera was setup, we had to take everything upstairs…

also, there wasn’t an elevator O______O

we set up about 5 lights, (3 peppers, and 2 tweenies) and the hallway turned into a sauna… It was by the grace of God that some tenant came by and asked if we wanted to use her fan… “leave it in front of my door when you’re done”

you angel of compassion you…

So the camera assistant and I checked the breaker box, and declared that we had about 40 amps to work with… we were wrong…

We started set up at 6pm, and by the time we actually started to shoot (8:30pm) the lights were getting hot… a few started smoking even…

and then… the lights went off… not just the lights we were working with… but all lights… We’d blown out the circuit on 2 floors… pretty fucking impressive, but not  really…

We had no permission to shoot there to begin with.. and the woman we made a deal with was pretty mean to begin with…

“GUYS… WRAP THIS SHIT UP!”

I mean… film crews work pretty hard, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of people move as quickly as we did getting the fuck out of there…

I know… dick move…

trust me I feel bad, I really do… But in the event that there was a fine to pay because of the power outage, we’d pay for it… (slipped the manager a note)

so uhhh yeah… guerilla filmmaking ftw

Yesterday’s Set Up: Day Shoot

First time working from a 10 Ton Truck.. I was Best Boy Electrician… Probably the most tiring job ever -_______-… unloaded most of the truck with the help from a few grips, ran power from the generator truck to cover the whole set and at the end of the night, had to wrap all of the cables… ALL OF THEM O_______O

about 12 20ft stingers (pretty much extension cords) and the collective cords for the ground, neutral and hot wires (which weighed about 70lbs (2)

It was a good time until no one else needed power… and I just pretty much stood there until someone needed an extra hand..

awesome…

this… ladies & gentlemen… is a C-Clamp

it’s a type of clamp device typically used to hold a wood or metal workpiece… Mostly used for setting up stages, walls, and sets at my school…

This fell on my head today… from about 6ft above my head…

Rule #76 of gripping… look out for other people, and don’t half ass your work.

Do not set a clamp high up without tightening it all the way… cause that shit will fall… and hit something… or in this case, someone…

…good times

I almost cried during my first overnight shoot… or at least I felt like I was gonna cry… My eyes burned from all the dust and asbestos in the air…

We started at 5pm (3:30pm for me, since I had to come in early and transfer footage from the night before)

and we didn’t end til 7am… I didn’t get home until 8:30, and a PA from set (a very good friend of mine) wanted to come over and play… she left at 10… and I had about 5 hours to figure out how to fit some sleep in…

I was still dusty/sweaty/dirty from shooting in the construction site  ballroom… ahem

That’s when I realized that I had to be back on set at 3:30… call time for everyone else was 6…

so I said fuck it, and went to sleep in my clothes…

good times…
