Last week’s shoot… 3rd time working with the 7D
this was our set last night…
we shot in a tiny apartment (like.. smaller than a studio) in Logan Square… The building was old so the hallways and stairwell were super scary. It was about 104˚ when we arrived (so at this point, my shirt isn’t the same color it was when I left the house) and we had to take the equipment from the truck to the lobby of the building…
Once camera was setup, we had to take everything upstairs…
also, there wasn’t an elevator O______O
we set up about 5 lights, (3 peppers, and 2 tweenies) and the hallway turned into a sauna… It was by the grace of God that some tenant came by and asked if we wanted to use her fan… “leave it in front of my door when you’re done”
you angel of compassion you…
So the camera assistant and I checked the breaker box, and declared that we had about 40 amps to work with… we were wrong…
We started set up at 6pm, and by the time we actually started to shoot (8:30pm) the lights were getting hot… a few started smoking even…
and then… the lights went off… not just the lights we were working with… but all lights… We’d blown out the circuit on 2 floors… pretty fucking impressive, but not really…
We had no permission to shoot there to begin with.. and the woman we made a deal with was pretty mean to begin with…
“GUYS… WRAP THIS SHIT UP!”
I mean… film crews work pretty hard, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of people move as quickly as we did getting the fuck out of there…
I know… dick move…
trust me I feel bad, I really do… But in the event that there was a fine to pay because of the power outage, we’d pay for it… (slipped the manager a note)
so uhhh yeah… guerilla filmmaking ftw
Yesterday’s Set Up: Night Shoot
Aside from sweating like a dude… last night was pretty fun…
Yesterday’s Set Up: Day Shoot
First time working from a 10 Ton Truck.. I was Best Boy Electrician… Probably the most tiring job ever -_______-… unloaded most of the truck with the help from a few grips, ran power from the generator truck to cover the whole set and at the end of the night, had to wrap all of the cables… ALL OF THEM O_______O
about 12 20ft stingers (pretty much extension cords) and the collective cords for the ground, neutral and hot wires (which weighed about 70lbs (2)
It was a good time until no one else needed power… and I just pretty much stood there until someone needed an extra hand..
awesome…
this… ladies & gentlemen… is a C-Clamp
it’s a type of clamp device typically used to hold a wood or metal workpiece… Mostly used for setting up stages, walls, and sets at my school…
This fell on my head today… from about 6ft above my head…
Rule #76 of gripping… look out for other people, and don’t half ass your work.
Do not set a clamp high up without tightening it all the way… cause that shit will fall… and hit something… or in this case, someone…
…good times
We started at 5pm (3:30pm for me, since I had to come in early and transfer footage from the night before)
and we didn’t end til 7am… I didn’t get home until 8:30, and a PA from set (a very good friend of mine) wanted to come over and play… she left at 10… and I had about 5 hours to figure out how to fit some sleep in…
I was still dusty/sweaty/dirty from shooting in the construction site ballroom… ahem
That’s when I realized that I had to be back on set at 3:30… call time for everyone else was 6…
so I said fuck it, and went to sleep in my clothes…
good times…
the AD of the production always felt more comfortable when he knew where the director was… there were many instances where the director would just wonder off set for extended periods of time, and when people found him, he was parked in a corner of a room playing with his iPad -_______-
soooo the beginning of the last day went something like this…
Our first location was a park right next to Lake Shore Drive… We finished there, and the director left. Apparently, the director, AD, producers and DP’s were supposed to discuss something inbetween moving from location to location. Obviously as 1st AC, I had to move equipment so I left just when the AD was about to gut punch someone.
Our next location was a restaurant… We all walk in to set up, and I spot the director… sitting at a table by himself… eating a burger and wiping ketchup from his face… The AD sees him from outside and storms in.
AD: Really?
Director: (with a mouthful of food) What… I was hungry
AD: We were looking for you. We called and you didn’t pick up.
Director: But I’m here… at the next location
AD: Eating a burger
Director: Dude… I thought you’d be happy
AD walks away…
Day 9 of shooting…
We shot in an old ballroom in one of the old hotels in Hyde Park… pieces of paints chips and dust were falling from the ceiling, people were coughing… I was in there for 20 minutes when my throat started itching, my lungs felt kind of heavy, then I started couching pretty hard…
hopefully that wasn’t asbestos… O_______O
anywho, woke up the next day hacking like my father and scratching at my eyes…
I went back anyway… he had masks… it was a good time..
During lunch, a PA, the sound guy and I went exploring in one of the dark rooms… looked like a location for Saw 6… we climbed a set of stairs and found a floating door that lead to the roof… Hoisted ourselves up and out and breathed in fresh air… i chickened out though -________-
Day 12 now… last day of shooting… I think I’ll miss the people more than anything …
“PA’s are people too” is also a viable option…
